CONTEST

THEME: Foreign Object

This Spring, Presentation House Gallery, North Vancouver is holding the fourth in a series of photo contests designed to inspire and encourage youth. We are asking students to submit a series of 2 photographs in response to our theme: Foreign Object.

Last season, for People Take Pictures of Each Other, many of  you gave us glimpses into your own cultural experience through portraiture. This season, with Foreign Object, we’d like you to investigate someone else’s cultural experience through a closer look at objects and things. Take this opportunity to discover a portion of your community that is less known to you! What kinds of cultural meanings can you find in material things? What can you learn? What can you teach others? Show us your willingness to explore Vancouver’s diversity through objects!

The photos will be adjudicated as a diptych, so the two images should be the same format and have a clear relationship to one another. Our jury will select a group of students to be part of an exhibition displaying a diverse selection of the contest‘s most creative work. The exhibition participants will receive equal prizing and have an opportunity to show their framed photographs in a public gallery setting. There are also opportunities to have these images displayed in prominent sites around the North Shore.

This is a great opportunity to showcase what we can do. Can’t wait to see what other students come up with! There are so many possibilities and ideas that go with this theme. I’m thinking.. compare and contrast? Good luck all!

This sounds like a truly fantastic contest that gives youth a great chance to explore and use their talents. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone else’s work, as well as being creative with guidelines in my own work. This will be a great chance to step into the life of some one else. I’m excited to see what people come up with

There’s so many places to go to with this topic that I just know I’ll be looking at photos and wishing I thought of those ideas too. And by having two photos, it gives the chance to tell a larger story and create a bigger imagery too. (: Time to get thinking!
